While training in Shotokan, as with most martial arts, you will run across terminology
which you may not understand.  Here is a list of some of the more common
terminology and techniques to help you.

General Terminology

Dojo: Training Hall (Martial Arts School)
Rei: Bow
Sensei: Teacher
Budo: Way of war (Martial Art)
Bushido: The way of the warrior
Yoi: Ready
Hajime: Start
Yame: Stop
Kiai: Spirit shout
Kata: Form
Kumite: Sparring
Keage: Snap
Kekomi: Thrust
Tobi: Jump
Soke: Founder
Obi: Belt
Gi: Karate Uniform
Yudansha: Black Belt
Jodan: Upper
Gedan: Lower
Chudan: Middle
Migi: Right
Hidari: Left
Mae: Front
Ushiro: Back
Gyaku: Reverse
Yoko: Side
Dachi: Stance
Geri: Kick
Tsuki: Punch
Uke: Block
Uchi: Strike

Zenkutsu Dachi: Forward stance

Neko-Ashi Dachi: Cat stance

Ushiro Geri: Turning back thrust
Chudan Soto Mikazuki geri: Outside Crescent
Chudan Uchi Mikazuki geri: Inside Crescent
