Koketsu Dojo of Shotokan Karate

Ranking
Ranking in Shotokan varies from dojo to dojo and from organization to organization. All
Shotokan schools use Kyu and Dan ranks to signify experience/skill while the actual belt
colors may differ. The Koketsu Dojo uses an eight kyu system as follows:
- White: Beginner
- Yellow: 8th Kyu
- Orange: 7th Kyu
- Green: 6th Kyu
- Blue: 5th Kyu
- Purple: 4th Kyu
- Brown: 3rd Kyu
- Brown: 2nd Kyu
- Brown: 1st Kyu
- Black: 1st Dan (Shodan)
The black belt ranks, or dan grades, are as follows:
Shodan: Lowest
Nidan
Sandan
Yandan
Godan
Rokudan
Shichidan
Hachidan
Kudan
Judan: Highest, usually reserved for the head of a style
